Sheaths, rubbers, love gloves – whatever you call them, you probably know the basic facts about condoms. These days, most sexually active adults are aware that condoms are an essential part of safer sex because of their STD-blocking powers.

But beyond the vague notion of “protection,” most people aren’t aware of exactly what the condom can do – and what its limits are. Here’s a primer.

What Condoms Do Best

Worn correctly and used consistently, condoms have been shown to reduce the risk of transmitting a number of STDs. They’re best at preventing those spread by genital fluids, including:

• HIV: The virus that causes AIDS, this STD is much harder to spread between partners who use condoms.
• Chlamydia: Even though this STD doesn’t get a lot of attention, it’s the bacterial STD most often spread in the U.S. The CDC estimates that Americans get about 2.8 million new cases of Chlamydia each year. That’s a pretty high number, considering how easy it is to prevent with condom use.
• Gonorrhea: A minor celebrity of the STD world, gonorrhea causes about 700,000 new infections in the United States every year.
• Trichomoniasis: This is a parasitic STD that infects a whopping 7.4 million people every year in this country.

What Condoms Do Second Best

Besides greatly reducing transmission risk of the above STDs, condoms can slightly lower the risk of transmission of others. But because the following STDs require only skin-to-skin contact to spread (rather than full fluid exchange), condoms are less effective.

That’s partly because these STDs can show up on parts of the body other than those that come into contact with the condom.

• Herpes: This viral infection is treatable but not curable. That means that people who have it have it for life. As much as 16.2% of the American population currently has genital herpes. If that number seems high, consider this: an infected person can spread herpes even in the absence of an outbreak.
• Syphilis: Once on the decline and now on the rise again, this STD is curable, especially when caught in the early stages. Phew.
• HPV: Human papillomavirus is the STD that causes genital warts and can lead to cervical cancer in women. There’s now a vaccine available to prevent HPV, but it hasn’t yet gained widespread acceptance or implementation.

Fact: Many STDs Are Symptom-Free

Here’s another tidbit many people don’t know about STDs: it’s common to have no symptoms at all after infection. None. Which means that condom use is essential even if you and your partner think you’re clean.

STD testing is the only way to know for sure whether or not you’ve got something you could give to a sexual partner. Wearing condoms is one of the only ways to prevent giving it.

And Let’s Not Forget Pregnancy

Condoms are well known for their birth control capabilities. But that doesn’t mean that women who use oral or other contraceptives can skip the latex when they’re sexually active. Pharmaceutical birth control does not prevent STD transmission.

The takeaway: wearing condoms and getting regular STD tests can prevent you from contracting or spreading a host of sexually transmitted diseases.
